UULM Action Network Endorses the TRUST Act AB4 (Ammiano)

trust actMembers of our Unitarian Universalist congregations have been active in founding detention center visitation programs across California. We have witnessed, first hand, the appalling waste of human and tax payer resources, and the devastating impact on children and families that result from incarcerating and deporting undocumented immigrants who are not criminals.

We are in strong support of the TRUST Act (AB 4-Ammiano), which will reform California’s participation in the fundamentally flawed “Secure” Communities or S-Comm deportation Program.

Pastoral Letter on Veto of the TRUST Act

Rev. Ramsden's Pastoral Letter responding to Governor Brown's veto of the TRUST Act:

October 1, 2012

Dear Friends,

Late Sunday night, Governor Brown vetoed the TRUST Act.

We at the UU Legislative Ministry and UULM Action Network are deeply disappointed in his decision. His veto puts many hard working immigrant families at continued risk of being split by deportations, and continues to erode the trust between the immigrant community and law enforcement, compromising our community safety.

Undocumented and mixed-status families are part of our congregations and communities. This is an especially important time to hold these families in our thoughts and prayers as well as all of the advocates who have worked so hard. It is profoundly hurtful and disorienting to have your family's safety and integrity continue to be the subject of intense political debate and public vitriol. LGBT families who lived through Prop 8 remember how it feels to be a community scapegoat.

While we were not able to get the Governor to sign the TRUST Act, let us not forget what we have accomplished. Neither California, the Governor, nor our coalition is the same.

Human Right to Water Signed into Law in California!

Girl drinking waterSeptember 25, 2012  Three cheers and thanks for all your support!

Governor Brown has signed AB685 (Eng),  the Human Right to Water bill. Also signed was AB1830(V.M. Perez) a second bill in the Human Right to Water bill package which will protect residents in mobile home parks from unreasonable water rates.  What a journey it has been. Members of low-income communities who live every day without access to safe affordable water have shown incredible resilience - never giving up and inspiring us all forward.

Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Action Network, CA has been privileged to be part of an inspiring coalition of faith, environmental justice, public health, tribal and environmental groups that came together to champion the human right to water in California.

Thanks to all who helped our elected officials understand what is at stake.  Together we are creating a wave of change.

Prayers of the People - Make a Prayer Flag and Support Immigrant Families

prayerflags

In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, prayer flags are used to send prayers for peace and compassion out into the world.  The beauty of the flags has inspired many, and people of diverse faith traditions have used the flags to offer messages of peace.  We invite you to create a prayer flag to send a message to your elected officials urging them to support the TRUST Act, which would bring greater peace and security to immigrant communities throughout California.

Hang them up in your congregation, then, when the time is right, we will ask for them to be sent to our office in Sacramento.
